What Does Your Dog Food Need To Be Healthy?

Friday Jul 23, 2010

When you think about it, what does your dog need from its food in order to be healthy?

Today our pets have a wide variety to meet their tastes and needs and we have our choice of what kind of food we can choose to feed them. Despite the variety, pet foods usually fall into three major categories. These categories are: Grocery store foods, these types of dog and pet foods are usually found in grocery stores and mass marketed retailers and can contain lower quality, less expensive ingredients. The second category is “premium dog foods,” which can also be found in grocery’s stores but are also found in pet stores and through your local veterinarian’s office.

These types of foods are usually made from some higher quality ingredients and are usually made evident by the expense of the food. Some of these pet foods though can contain lower quality ingredients that you aren’t aware of. The third and final category is healthy dog foods which are a relatively new addition and make use of the latest research into the best foods and blends for your pet.

So what is best for our pet and how do we choose the proper dog food?

Quality, healthy ingredients make quality, healthy dog food. Nutrition is important no matter whether you’re a person or a pet. Pets, just like humans, need good nutrition not just to survive but to truly be healthy. They need good quality protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fats. This is where premium, healthy dog food can benefit your pets.

Typically, healthy dog food contains quality protein, good quality carbohydrates and fiber, natural fats and preservatives. The protein does not come from dead or diseased animals and you will never see the word by-product on the label. By-products (feet, bones intestines, etc) are inferior protein sources that are sometimes used and can be very hard for your dog to digest. Less digestion means less nutritious and therefore not as healthy. Quality protein helps build and maintain muscle strength.

If you see corn, soy or wheat used as protein sources instead of meat, you now know your pet isn’t getting healthy dog food. Good quality carbohydrates give your pet the energy to be active. Good fiber sources help promote a healthy digestive system and colon. Quality fats from animal sources contain omega fatty acids that benefit the skin and coat.

Believe it or not dog food manufacturers that label their bags “premium food” use these ingredients as well as chemical preservatives and artificial colors that can be harmful to pets.

Benefits beyond healthy nutrition

When your pet is eating right, it feels better, giving you a happy and more playful companion, fewer trips to the vet, and less wasted food. Ultimately, giving your pet better food might seem expensive initially, but keeping your pet healthy saves you money, time and expense in the long run. Healthy, premium dog food can possibly extend the life of your pet giving you more quality years together.

hello:

What healthy canned cat food does your cat absolutely LOVE?
Looking for canned food with no by-products in it that my cat will enjoy. She doesn’t like canned food that much. It is a hassel to feed it to her sometimes because she often needs to be pursuaded to eat it.
I feed her canned food so she will get extra water in her. This prevents urinary problems, which she is suseptible to. Cat’s don’t tend to drink enough water and dry food has very little water in it. So I feed her canned and dry.

I refuse to feed her grocery store brands like Iams, 9 Lives, Fancy Feast. If you read the ingredients they contain by-products which aren’t that healthy.

So, why bother? Some cats prefer dry food only, and this is perfectly fine and very healthy for them. My cat eats both–Friskies Dental Diet and Friskies "Special Diet". But, it’s best to let your cat decide on this. If she prefers dry food–give it to her and forget all about the canned stuff. There is no law, rhyme or reason as to WHY she would need canned food. All the nutrition she needs is in the dry food. Just make sure she has fresh water daily also, and she’ll be fine.

I would go to a feed store and look for things there. just read the label and decide for yourself. Or, if all else fails, I would just cook her an egg or some chicken or some rice. And actually, cats will drink as much water as they need. There really is no canned cat food that is going to be truly healthy for her. Canned food is bad for their teeth.
if she is susceptible to urinary problems, then look for a food with low ash content in it. If call your vet, they can tell you where to get some science diet c/d or u/d. both of these formulas are good for urinary and kidney health.

Wellness. Very high quality, no byproducts, and my cats love it.
Since I started adding canned Wellness to their diet, my cats shed a lot less, and their coats are amazingly soft and super-shiny.

Canned food is healthier for cats than dry, as it is much lower in carbohydrates (cats are obligate carnivores and don’t need much carbohydrate in their diet). Feeding a good low-carbohydrate canned food can help prevent diet related problems such as obesity and diabetes.

If you must feed dry, giving a portion of canned food each day too will still help. I give my cats dry during the day, and meal of canned in the evening.

I agree with Bess. A quality canned food is the best for your cat.

I have three male cats who eat only canned and a raw meat diet I prepare for them from organic turkey and chicken. I use Natural Balance (which has quite a few "flavors" to choose from – turkey and giblet is one they don’t particularly like). I use Wellness turkey and turkey and salmon – my cats don’t like the chicken or beef in the Wellness. Also Lick Your Chops – lamb and the chicken – my cats don’t like the turkey in that either. Funny as in the raw meat the turkey is the favorite over the chicken. Natural Balance has a salmon and fish variety – I use the fish sparingly, like twice a week max.

Wellness and Natural Balance have the small cans which you can try with your cat for starters. Your cat will eat what you provide when she is hungry so don’t worry about her preferences over her health and well-being. Owners create "finicky" cats.
