Is Our Pet Stuff Really Necessary?

Saturday Apr 24, 2010

There have always been some animal owners that go over the top with pampering their pet poodle or fluffy feline, although most of us would stretch to no more to a colorful collar and a squeaky toy. But things have changed and more pets than ever before are getting 5 star treatments as the shops stock up on all the latest pet stuff to hit the modern market.

If you are an animal lover, and you probably are if you’re reading here, then you will probably relate to this. There are so many cool gimmicky, practical and ridiculous pet playthings around today, that we as a nation are spending more on pet stuff than ever before.

Have you seen the dog toothbrushes, or ribbons for cats? What about those little shoes and socks to keep the paws warm on those cold winter walkies, not to mention the tartan coats, and little caps? Honestly, it’s as if Sherlock Holmes has been turned into a canine by the local witch. But when is too much of this pet stuff just a little too much for the pets?

I understand that these owners are genuinely loving and caring towards their animals, but I wonder what the pets would say about it all if only they could speak? Would Pita the poodle really be jumping for joy at the front door if he knew he was going to Suzie’s Salon for a cut and blow dry? And what about that pink tint? Hmm!

Back in the 1960’s we had a lovely mongrel bitch called Babble. She was allowed to run amuck in the local park and get all mudded as she enjoyed a right good ole game of fetch the stick. No colors, no coats or fancy foot wear, and no avoiding puddles or dirty fields. Just a boy, his dog, and small tree branch! We had no pricy pet stuff in those days. Babble’s treat was a simple tuppenny ha’penny chewable thingamajig that lasted her for months before she was able to gnaw it to bits.

Our beautiful Babble went on to live for 16 long years before she eventually passed away. She was a happy dog and we were happy to have had her. So what’s with all these natural and premium pet foods that are being promoted as the in-thing for your dog’s health? Then there are vitamins for all kinds of animals plus various grooming supplies. Now we’re seeing flashing collars, dog shock collars (now that’s a different article), lavish leashes, travel accessories, bedding (including four posters for rodents!) and aquariums with underwater fairgrounds!

Don’t get me wrong here, there’s a lot of great pet stuff out there among the stupid items, but I think the best present any animal could get from its owner, it a bit of customary fuss, regular meals, and plenty of opportunity for exercise, whether that’s a walk for the hounds, a fly pass for the birds, and wheels, swings and climbing things for the rodents.

Enough said!

Is it really necessary to stuff a turkey?
This is my first time making a turkey day dinner and it’s a pretty small one. One thing i’ve noticed throughout the years is how little people seems to go for the turkey stuffing in our family. I don’t really want to waste food like that.

So I was wondering do we HAVE to put stuffing in our turkey, like it’s some baking process or something, or is it something optional and we can still make a great turkey without it?

Thanks in advance.

you dont have, to, i advice you to put the stuffing around the turkey when finished or in a bowl, and besides, its less degrading for the bird…

No. Just a ritual way to serve it. Actually the cavity doesn’t hold enough to serve everyone and a bowl in the oven is usually brought to the table.

Alot of people don’t cook the stuffing in the turkey because of the fat content, etc. Go to foodnetwork and research brining. You could brine it, then stuff it with citrus and onions (lemon, orange, etc.) Then discard the stuff inside. It keeps the turkey moist to have something in it, and it flavors the meat. Then make the stuffing on the stove.

Might also be interesting to do the beer can thing. I’ve seen them doing that with chickens on food network.

Not at all, in fact, I recommend against stuffing the bird. Instead, bake it in a separate dish.

If you were to cook it inside the bird, chances are by the time the stuffing is cooked through, your turkey will by dry. If the turkey is done but the stuffing is undercooked, you run the risk of cross-contamination and food sickness.

Not only is it not necessary it can be dangerous to stuff turkey. Recent studies have shown that stuffing your turkey builds up alot of bacteria and can make people sick. Don’t bother. I always hated stuffed turkey anyway but love the stuffing..

No, in fact, your turkey will cook faster without the stuffing. The temperature must reach 180 °F in the thigh of a whole turkey before removing it from the oven. Cook a turkey breast to 170 °F.

APPROXIMATE COOKING TIMES

UNSTUFFED

4 to 6 lb breast…..1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hrs
6 to 8 lb breast…2 1/4 to 3 1/4 hrs
8 to 12 lbs…………….2 3/4 to 3 hrs
12 to 14 lbs…………..3 to 3 3/4 hrs
14 to 18 lbs……..3 3/4 to 4 1/4 hrs
18 to 20 lbs……..4 1/4 to 4 1/2 hrs
20 to 24 lbs…………..4 1/2 to 5 hrs

Sew What?:

My family likes the stuffing as much as the turkey. But, you don’t have to stuff the bird. Your turkey will be delicious.

I’ve made turkeys stuffed (my favorite way) and unstuffed (when I just want roast turkey but don’t need dressing).

If you catch the turkey experts on tv this week, most will recommend not stuffing the turkey for safety reasons and serving a pan dressing on the side. Or not, I hate food waste myself.

For a small bird, you are better to do this. One, take your bird, rinse well and pat dry. Make your herbed butter with the sage, thyme, rosemary, garlic and salt and pepper. Mix this in a processor, place on plastic film, and let harden about a half hour. While this is happening, set your bird aside, make your dressing, set this in a buttered casserole, set aside. Place your bird on a bed of chopped celery, onions, carrots, parsley, salt, pepper, and two cups of white wine, this will keep bird moist. Stuff the bird with whole lemons you poke with a fork, and place in cavity of bird. Your butter is now ready to slice, and place discs under breast skin, and in between legs and thighs. Roast for 2-2.5 hours, basting with melted butter and wine mixture from pan juices. Let bird sit for 15-30 minutes before carving, make gravy with the pan juices, serve with turkey and your other dishes. Easy and soooo good.

Nope, not necessary at all. The turkey will actually cook faster without any stuffing in it, plus you run the risk of bacteria from the raw turkey contaminating your stuffing if it’s not baked all the way through. If you don’t want to waste food, don’t serve it. Or just make a smaller, separate pan of stuffing if you feel like it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it, lol.

no you don’t have to, but why not fill that space with something, even rice that’s been semi cooked, or apple slices that are seasoned with finely chopped walnuts and a can of cranberries just mix them all together and put in the turkey!
