I Want To Eat Premium Pet Food
Posted by admin | Under Pet Vitamins Wednesday May 26, 2010
I have a written a few articles on premium dog food and premium cat food. Some articles even have included the importance of supplements, treats and even the bones you give as a reward. So you can only imagine how important it is to feed our pets the proper nutrition. This nutrition comes daily from the food we decide to give them. It is extremely important to feed premium, quality foods for their health and in some cases their mental well being.
This article is especially important to me because of the recent pet food recall including dog and cat food. Please visit your vet immediately if you see any signs that may appear “abnormal” behavior. It may have nothing to do with what they ate but it is better to be safe than sorry.
As I write this article on March 25, 2007, the recall has widened to include all wet food as a safety precaution regardless of the date code, reports the Globe & Mail. Retailers have been asked to remove all of these foods. The “recall” list can be found by visiting menufoods.com/recall/.
As you may or may not have heard there has been a huge pet food recall on numerous brands of dog and cat food that may contain aminopterin, rat poison. Yes, rat poison. At this time there is no news as to how it got into the food. It has been reported this has been the cause of at least 16 deaths as well as more that are very ill and receiving treatment.
What can separate the premium food from mainstream?
Unfortunately, current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your dog or cat. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of pet food really contain. For example: the use of by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat.
Be Aware of Undesirable Ingredients
By-products – basically this is what is left over when the good cuts of meat are taken for humans. Bones, intestines, heads, feet, tendons, ligaments and other body parts are known as by-products.
Grains like soy, corn, corn gluten and wheat gluten are often used as protein sources; however, they are generally inferior and difficult to digest.
Chemical Preservatives like BHA, BHT and ethoxoquin can be very harmful to pets.
Freshness – Large manufacturers make pet food in tremendous batches that can last for a very long time, so you may be feeding food that is six months to a year old.
These are only some things to stay away from. Look to see if your dog or cat food contains vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and bacteria cultures to name a few.
Remember, what your vet recommends as premium dog food might be the farthest thing from healthy.

What is a good premium food for my boxers?
I have tried several premium foods like, Nutro-max and natural choice and ultra, Diamond, Science diet, pro plan, and more but I can’t find one that don’t give them incredibly bad gas and loose stool. Even after a month on the same food it usally is still the same. The only stuff they don’t have a problem with is the cheap stuff like puppy chow and iams or store brand, Does any one know why? , My female is alergic to the nutro ultra, she broke out in hives and had servere runs. I want to feed them good food but not have my house smell all the time.
My beagles love Eukanuba. They don’t have any of those problems you describe. There may be other underlying health issues with your dogs that are not food related…you should discuss your concerns with your vet.

Did you switch them over gradually, mixing half and half, and then slowly giving them more of the new kind? That might make a difference w/ the gas, I’m not sure. I did a lot of research on dog foods a few years ago. I currently feed my dog Science Diet but Eukanuba is another really good dog food.

Eukanuba is a quality line of dog food. It is more expensive than the regular brands but I think it is worth the extra money. The high quality ingredients are gentle on the dogs GI tract.
You should try it.

Have you considered cooking for your dog or going to a raw diet?
I have a sheltie that could not tolerate any type of kibble at a fairly young age and I went to a cooked diet and it worked wonders. When I can’t cook, my dogs get a very high end freeze dried raw.
Your dog could easily be allergic to something in the foods your are feeding. The biggest culprit is usually grains. Check out the following sources for more information on possible diets and dog food research, etc.

Try Wellness, Innova, or Canidae. You want to mix the foods over a week and a half period. 25% new for a few days, then 50% new then 75% new. With all the constant switching their bowels are a little irritated most likely. You should give them a full 6 weeks on the food after it becomes their total diet. The reason why the crappy foods prevent the loose stool is all the corn in them. It will take a while for their systems to get used to the higher quality food. Try one of the lamb and rice varieties since one of yours had an allergic reaction. My dobie is allergic to several things and I currently have her on Wellness Venison and Rice, and she no longer has the horrid gas she used to and poops much less. Also cut out any treats you’re giving them during this trial period. The other thing is that if you are giving them people food that can make them really stinky.

I’d try Wellness. Start with the fish and sweet potato formula. It’s the best place to start when trying to isolate an allergy. My dog has had problems with loose stool. Wellness and California Natural fixed the problem. When switching foods, best to mix it in gradually. Whole Dog Journal (www.whole-dog-journal.com) has lots to say on food as well as how to deal with allergies and how to switch foods.
