I use the cheap clay litter from WalMart. It takes a total of maybe 15 seconds a day to ‘clean’ the box. I scoop anything in it that’s used when I first get up in the morning, look again when I get home from work, and make one more check before bed time. If I see the surface disturbed in between those, I stop and do a quick scoop.

All used litter, wet and poop, gets put into an old cat food bag (they’[re plasticized, the bottoms don’t fall out if they get damp) and the top crimped down. Once a day, usually at night, I take it out to the garbage outside and dump it. It NEVER gets put into the kitchen garbage.

We don’t have any smells in the house, and we have multiple cats. In summer I’ll get it all emptied out maybe twice during the nice weather and wash it out with the spray hose, but really if you keep up with it, there won’t be all that much to worry about.

There’s those pads of what look like fake grass you can put in front of the box. These make the cat’s toes open up as they walk on it, and any trapped litter on their feet falls down into the plastic grass and won’t track through the house.

Most people use clumping litter, and you only need to daily remove the clumps, and then use your best judgment as to when to completely change. If the clumps get broken, or they mess against the side of the litter box, that calls for more frequent cleaning.

I have posted a link on litter box habits, and while it is mainly for non-medical reasons why a cat might stop using the litter box, it gives good hints as to litter box maintenance.

There are automatic litter boxes that use a sweeper comb to remove the clumps after a set time once the litter box is visited. They are a bit on the expensive side, and sometimes break down. The thing is if your cat is good with what he has, it is often best to not change things, other than the type of litter. Going from regular clay to clumping litter normally is not a problem.

I use Tidy Cat scoopable (small spaces) I scoop daily. This helps keep the odor and the amount of litter used down. I only keep the litterbox 1/3 of the way full. This helps with the amount of litter that gets tracked out to a minimum. Using an enclosed litterbox helps alot.
Unfortunately some litter will get tracked out because it sticks to their paws. I keep a broom and dustpan handy to sweep up.
I have 4 cats and 4 litterboxes – A 30-35 lb container of scoopable litter last me about 2 weeks.

You'll save more cat litter if you clean it more often like everyyday or every other day. Then there wont be so much.

there is a new cat litter that turns blue when wet, I’m definantly going to get it because you cant always find the spots that the cat crapped or peed in. I know because I have two cats that are as fat as h___!! so they poop a lot and spread it out so im going to get that litter so I can (hopefully) find the cat’s presents.

Well find name brands of litter because they have ways of keeping it cleaner. We use Fresh Step. Another thing you might wanna consider are the mechanical litter pans because when it may be quite expensive but it’s well worth your money. And remember try to find litter thats really good with odor control.

go to your local pet store and they will sell litter boxes from the ranges from $20.00 to $30.00 but its a good price it has a little hut over the litter were the cat can go in and kick around as much litter as much as it wants and it wont get on ur floor…this litter box also has litter that changes color when your cat goes to the bathroom….so you know were to pick up and how much you have to pick up….good luck

I use the cheapest store brand they have that is a clay based litter. It doesn’t clump so you scoop less out and it doesn’t track as bad, but I keep a dust buster handy near his box.

Also a little baking soda in bottom will help with odors.
They make automatic scooping litter boxes.
