Diabetes is a silent killer. Slowly, it can take the life out of your pet. This disease may not show any outward symptoms, which actually makes it deadlier.

Most dog owners don’t know that their pet is suffering from this disease until it is too late. Dogs with diabetes should be cared for accordingly for their condition not to exacerbate.
Just follow the guidelines below and your dog will be in the pink of health at all times despite its present condition.

1. Visit the vet regularly.

Once your dog has diabetes, it would require regular appointments with the doctor. The vet would diagnose the present condition of your pet and would provide it with the right medications. It is very important that your pet’s health is monitored as frequently as needed because its condition may change from good to worse without you knowing about it.

2. Give your dog its medicines.

The vet would give your dog the necessary medications it needs to manage its disease. It is best that you follow all the vet’s instructions from dosage to the frequency of shots. Dogs suffering from advanced cases of diabetes may require regular insulin shots in order to experience immediate relief from their condition. You would have to give the shots yourself so make sure that you do it well.

3. Give your dog regular exercises.

Exercise is very important for dogs with diabetes. Take your dog out for a walk more frequently this time around. Doing so would allow the dog to manage its insulin levels and keep it active. It is possible that your dog would experience lowered energy after the walks. This is one of the effects of diabetes. To counter this, try to you can give your pet healthy honey or anything that the vet recommends.

4. Provide your dog with a high fiber diet.

More than anything else, your dog needs added nutrients in the food that it eats. Dogs with diabetes need a fiber-rich, low fat, and high carbohydrate diet. It may also be necessary for you to change your dog’s feeding schedule for it to correlate with its shots. The quantity of food you should give your pet must be monitored closely as well. Let the veterinarian guide you accordingly so you’ll know which foods to give and which foods to avoid.

5. Give your dog some vitamin supplements.

Most dogs with diabetes have problems meeting their nutritional requirements for the day. If this is your biggest problem with your pet, it is best that you give your pet some helpful supplements that can help improve its health. You may have to give your pet Vitamin A, B, and C. Regular intake of the mineral Chromium would help a lot as well.

Dogs with diabetes can still live a normal life. It is but a matter of managing the disease well. Pet owners should be very wary that their pet’s condition may worsen anytime soon so they have to do everything that it takes to make sure that their dog is living as comfortably as possible. Work closely with the veterinarian and your dog will continue to live a happy and a contented life with you.

Taking care of a pet is quite easy as well as should be well taken care. Pet care is in fact a simple job, and includes the very important functions of grooming and striving to maintain good pet health care. General pet supplies could be considered a definition of useful tools for grooming and keeping your pet in good health.

Let us consider some useful terms which should be taken care for the well being of your pet:

Choosing A Pet:

The process of choosing a pet is very important. Choosing a pet depends on one’s preferences, but there are still some important things that should be kept in mind. One should always choose an animal of good breed. Secondly, the pet should be healthy especially if it is still in the initial stage of its life. A healthy young pet shows good fast growth.

Pet Supplies:

You should make a complete list of pet supplies and include the following: pet food and food bowls, pet id tags and collar, pet medications, supplements and tonics, etc. Some other items to consider are animal carriers, pet houses and furniture, pet beds, clothes, and pet jewelry.

Online Pet Supplies:

Online pet supplies are supplies that can be purchased from pet stores over the Internet. There are numerous pet grooming product manufacturers and pet-grooming stores selling their products online through their individual official websites.

Pet Grooming Supplies:

Pet grooming supplies include items such as grooming clippers, pet hair care products, soaps, shampoo and perfumes.

Pet Health:

Pet health is a very important responsibility of pet ownership. For puppies and kittens, or any other four-legged pets, important treatments would include giving a hygiene bath, cleaning, combing, brushing, checking ears, paws, teeth and underside of the tongue, nail trimming, removing fleas and insects, and fixing regular meetings with a professional veterinary. A good pet owner should follow a regular schedule of grooming sessions.

Pet Care:

Pet care can require a lot of patience. Like children, pets often require special attention. A puppy, kitten or any other pet in its infancy needs to be handled with extreme care. In particular they must be groomed properly, fed carefully, and bedded properly.

Pet Insurance :

When you are treating your pet as your family member why not covering your pet with an insurance policy. Yes! That’s absolutely possible and you will find many insurance companies providing policies for your beloved pet. Pet insurance is now a days very common and used largely by many pet lovers. Though how much you take care of you pet but you never know when an emergency situation arrives.

There is a very famous saying from George Eliot “Pets are such agreeable friends, they ask no questions and they pass no criticisms” about pet animals. Pets have always been friendly to humans and often show their love and affection by licking, hickeys, even love-bites.

Your dog can be the best thing that can happen to you and your family. It brings in a different kind of joy and unity for all family members. And while pet dogs give you their unconditional gift of joyfulness, you need to take proper care of them. Caring for your pet dog takes more than just feeding and training. Your pet dog needs a balanced diet, happy lifestyle, proper exercise, and regular visits to the veterinarian.

The foremost consideration when having a pet dog is the careful choice of veterinarian. Your dog’s vet should be trustworthy and likable. Just like your children who are afraid of dentists, your pet dog may feel estranged and intimated by his doctor. While still a puppy, bring your pet to a vet. Also, it helps if you retain the same veterinarian all throughout his lifetime. Your dog develops a level of familiarity with his vet and staying with the same doctor makes him feel comfortable at every visit.

During a visit to a veterinarian, discuss with your doctor the potential risks or problems that your pet might acquire. State to the vet everything what you give to your dog including food, training, medicine, food supplements, and even his shelter if he has one.

Diseases are very common among dogs. Check on the skin and fur-related problems of your dog, such as ticks, fleas, and worms. You may even ask your doctor to conduct a stool test and examine if there are viruses and worms inside the dog’s system. With this, it would be best if you take a stool sample of your pet with you when visiting the vet.

From time to time, the doctor may prescribe medicines or food supplements. Vets apply syringe administration, especially if there is a serious illness, or if your pet dog needs vaccination. Oral administration of medicines also requires careful methods.

Your best care efforts for your dog happen at home. Always feed your dog a balanced meal but avoid overfeeding, as it will cause obesity that can lead to sickness and other health problems. As your pet dog ages, his exercising needs also increases. But make sure the physical activity is appropriate for his abilities. Dietary supplements like chondroitin or glucosamine help in preventing arthritis.

Your pet dog also has needs for his social life. Take him regularly to parks where he can meet other dogs. And most importantly, make him feel that he is a big part of the family. Hugs, strokes, tickles, and playful memories mean so much to your pet dog.

But she has been growing at a very fast rate into a jumbo rat, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyway, she is getting some kind of rat-mix from Petco for food. I’m sorry, I’m not sure on the brand. She hasn’t been getting lab-blocks lately so maybe that has to do with it? Anyway, what can I supplement her food with for optimal health?
Maybe she needs fresh veggies every day? I guess then I’m wondering if there is any food rats are allergic to or shouldn’t have?

When the phone started to ring and my email started to fill, I knew something must have happened again in the world of dog and cat food. As of this writing more foods have been recalled and a few more ingredients besides wheat gluten have been added to the list of “not to safe.”

Evidence suggesting that a shipment of the ingredient “Rice Protein Concentrate” contained melamine has come to light. As reported by OregonLlive.com posted by The Associated Press and The Oregonian “Ingredients imported from China that went into recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their protein content, federal officials said today.

That’s one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods. Melamine has been found by U.S. laboratories in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China.”

Melamine, an ingredient in plastics and fertilizers could lead to kidney failure in animals.

Stephen Sundlof, chief veterinarian for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said melamine, which has turned up in more than 100 brands of cat and dog food, might have been used to falsely boost the apparent nutritional content of rice protein. Melamine can skew test results to make a product appear more protein-rich than it really is, Sundlof said.

You think when you are buying food that all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests in mind …………..right? – After all, who doesn’t love your pets more? Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your pet. For example: by-products used (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), or as some of you heard the 4 D’s, dead diseased, dying and disabled Chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) should not be in your pet’s food. Look for grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat, should be avoided

If you switch to premium dog food, switch your pet’s diet to premium treats, bones and supplements. Often times we over look what else we are giving them. Treats can contain the harmful and not so healthy ingredients as listed above.

Life’s Abundance premium pet food for puppies and adult dogs, cats and kittens is made using only fresh, human-quality ingredients. It is a nutrient dense food with high quality meat proteins and NO by-products, corn, wheat, gluten or soy. NO artificial flavors, colors, sugars or chemical preservatives.

Okay, I admit it. I am fascinated, overly curious, not quite obsessed with the idea of “you are what you eat.” If you could see me, you’d say I need to lose more than a few pounds and certainly don’t seem to practice what fascinates me so. I know in my gut (literally), that my consumption of overly processed foods, restaurant lunches, sweets and chips are slowly but surely going to cause me major harm and very probably chop a few years off my life. To my credit, I am getting up early every morning and exercising in an effort to, freif not lose weight, at least stave off the diabetes that runs in my family. So, if my family needs to eat better, what about my pets?

Hopefully, you’ve all read my article on the horrible things that are found in commercial, pet foods. If not, check it out at the link below. When I found out what was in the kibble we were feeding both our dog and cat, I researched the alternatives and came up with a great all natural dry pet food. I’ve been extremely happy with the results of the switch with Annie, our cat, but for some reason, Dax just doesn’t go for it. In fact, he really isn’t crazy about dry food in general. He will eat it when he gets hungry, but let’s just say he doesn’t seem to enjoy his food. I’ve tried several brands and nothing flips his bippy. On the other hand, he jumps for joy when I give him a scrambled egg or chicken scraps. And salmon! Katy, bar the door!

So here we are. While I’m trying to convince myself to feed my human family better, maybe Dax would be better off, too, with a more natural diet of fresh foods. I’m not committing to anything at this point, but I’m willing to do some research and see how convincing it is. Want to go along?

You know, when I think back to visits at my grandparents’ farm, I never saw my grandmother feed their dog anything but table scraps. I don’t think I ever saw a bag of dog food at their house. Now, today, table scraps would mean pizza, French fries and other bad examples of human “food.” But not back then. My grandparents raised grass fed beef, which they slaughtered and ate. My grandmother had a huge garden and Papa had acres of corn. They grew what they ate and the scraps that Beau got were good, healthy, all-natural and pesticide free.

So, the first question that comes to mind is that of total nutrients. I know the premium dry foods I have been buying assure me that they are formulated to supply all the nutrients Dax needs. So how can I provide everything my dog needs in a homemade diet? Well, let’s see what the experts have to say. They tell me to aim for variety to ensure a balance of nutrients.

They tell me that my dog and cat are natural carnivores and that meat and other protein sources should be high on the list of ingredients in this new way of eating. They also tell me to feed the meat raw. Okay, now wait a minute. That just grosses me out. What about e-coli and salmonella and all those other nasties found in raw meat? Well, it seems that your dog’s stomach has a much higher acid content than your’s and can handle raw meat just fine. In fact, raw meat is much higher in nutrients that cooked meat.

Interchange lean meats such as turkey, liver, mackerel, chicken, tuna, heart, lean hamburger, duck, rabbit or fish. Try ground meats for convenience and ease of eating.

Meat alone should not be the only source of protein for our critters. There are lots of other ways to beef up the protein intake. Eggs are an excellent, low-cost source of low-fat protein. Again, experts recommend feeding them raw. Try cottage cheese, too. Whole grains are another cost-effective source of high quality protein as well as carbohydrates and an array of vitamins and minerals. Grains, however, should definitely be cooked before feeding to aid in digestion. The most cost effective sources of good grains are oatmeal, cornmeal, millet and bulgur (whatever that is).
//-->

The list goes on. Beans and other legumes such as split peas and lentils are great sources of protein. Cook them just like you would for your family. These are good to cook in larger quantities and freeze in meal portions.

Okay, we’ve got protein covered. What’s next? Vegetables. Veggies are vital for adding vitamins, minerals and roughage. Some can be fed raw, such as grated carrots, squashes, lettuce and other greens, and grated beets. Others like corn, peas, green beans, and broccoli need to be cooked. Please! No canned vegetables! Our focus here is on fresh foods. If the vegetables are not organically grown, be sure to wash them thoroughly, even use a little soap and then rinse thoroughly.

Now that the basics are taken care of, the next thing the experts say we need to consider is supplements. Evidently, both cats and dogs, but especially dogs, have a high calcium requirement. Calcium can be added to a fresh food diet in several ways. A common source of calcium is bones. This is where experts take very different paths. Some advocate feeding your dog raw bones. Others are opposed based on the fact that cow bones can contain high levels of lead or can splinter. Those that oppose raw bones recommend the use of bone meal. Now, let me stop and stress right here that they are not referring to the bone meal found at your local garden center. It’s toxic to animals. The bone meal recommended for feeding is that found in health food stores recommended for human consumption or some say, better yet, a bone meal made especially for animals. I’m thinking a large pet store might be a good source or maybe a good feed store.

A great source of natural calcium can be found in something we all through in the trash: egg shells. Who knew? In his book, Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats, Dr. Richard Pitcairn recommends washing eggshells right after cracking and letting them dry. Bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes and then crush into a fine powder. This can then be sprinkled on your pet’s food. If you prefer, you can even crush calcium tablets into a powder. Don’t give them to your pet whole.

Other recommended supplements include nutritional or brewer’s yeast for its B-vitamins, iron and other nutrients; oils such as fish oil and cod liver oil for Omega-3 and Omega-6 benefits; Vitamin E is a natural anti-oxidant and can be found in wheat germ or just puncture and squeeze a capsule over your pet’s food.

So, the last question that comes to mind is this: I’ve always heard that a dog needs dry, crunchy food to help keep his teeth clean. This is still true with a fresh food diet. A good, all natural, crunchy dog biscuit, fed once or twice a day will help exercise gums and clean teeth.

This is a very brief overture to the world of fresh food feeding for pets. I know I don’t feel guilty anymore for feeding Dax meat scraps and eggs. If you want to know more, please check my website often. I will be posting more in-depth articles on this topic. In the meantime, happy eating!

Missing Link Plus is a powder that you add to the food (or you can mix it with a nice treat, such as a little bit of ice cream, or canned food) that has gluocosamine (sp?) to help the joints.

Older dogs are most prone to arthritis and that’s the sad fact. Arthritis in dogs is very similar to arthritis in humans. And there are no absolute cures yet. The only thing that you can do for now is to manage the disease and make your dog feel comfortable despite its condition.

Old or young dogs with arthritis can still live a normal life if owners just give them what they need to ease the pain. For starters, your dog is going to need comfortable bedding. Arthritis is a joint and muscle condition that could really be crippling. The most you can do is give your pet soft beddings, ideally a rubber foam mattress that is about five inches thick.

Dogs with arthritis would benefit most from regular exercise. However, never allow your dog to perform any extraneous exercises any longer as it may negatively affect their condition. Mild and gentle walking exercises are good enough. Make it a point that you walk your dog a few blocks everyday. Running is discouraged. If your pet is a guard dog or a field dog, maybe you should consider retiring it and just make it a regular household pet.

What complements good exercise is proper diet. Always watch the weight of your dog, especially if it belongs to the larger breeds. These dogs can easily become overweight. But just the same, smaller dogs can be obese. And being overweight limits their daily activities. As such, they won’t be able to do several long walks with you. What’s more, your dog’s weight will be putting too much strain on its joints. This aggravates the condition even more. If your dog is overweight, give it a light diet. Don’t wait for it to contract arthritis before doing something about its meals.

On the other hand, there are dog food formulas that are especially designed for arthritic dog. Ask your vet about it. Sick dogs require a change in their diet plan. Your vet should be able to provide the right nutritional meals for your pet. He might advise you to use Purina’s JM dog food or Hill’s RX J/D formula.

It may also be necessary to give your dog commercial medicines to aid in its health. These medicines are again, prescribed by the vet. Give it to your pet as indicated and always bring your dog to its regular checkups. The vet needs to monitor the health of your pet so that it can adjust the medications as needed. Some dogs respond well to certain medicines while others don’t. This is the reason why post-diagnosis visits are always crucial. Never miss one or your dog may suffer unnecessarily from arthritis.

Aside from prescription drugs, there are over-the-counter medicines and natural remedies that can help your dog. Aspirin is known to relieve pain and inflammation in pets if used the right way. As for natural medicines, Omega 3 supplements, vitamins, and minerals can contribute so much help alleviate the condition. Under the guidance of the vet, give your dog a combination of these medicines so it can live longer and much happier with you.

The giant green iguana as its name implies describes that indeed it is a large reptile and ideal for pet lovers who love to take care of large animals. They grow to about the length of 5 to 6 feet on growth rate faster than human growth. It can reach maximum size in only about 4 to 5 years. Its life span can reach to about 12 to 15 years.

The cage for keeping giant green iguanas must be large enough to cover its size with allowance to provide freedom of movement. Ideal size must be twice its length in width and same length in height and width. Approximately this will be about 12 ft x 6 ft x 6 ft.

This large size also gives space for tree branches for the giant green iguanas to stay on and move about for the much needed muscle exercise and mood toning. As much as possible, the cage must contain the likeness of its natural habitat surroundings. Iguanas come from the jungles of tropical exotic forests which are rich in fresh air with no air or noise pollutants.

Iguanas are natural plant eaters but they are also omnivorous meaning they could eat plants and animals alike. They eat leaves, fruits and vegetables. If you put in a cricket inside its cage, it will go hunt for it. However care must be given not to give giant green iguanas with veggies that can be harmful to them like spinach, cauliflower and beets because they contain mild acids that are considered toxic for the lizard. Brussels sprouts are also not good for them because of possible salmonella contamination.

Fruits are also eaten by giant green iguanas. Banana is one of its favorites and its potassium content is important for their growth. Other nutrients that must be ensured for iguanas are vitamin d, phosphorous and calcium. Twice a week, the iguanas must be dispensed with vitamin and mineral supplements since being out in the wild, access to the natural source of such nutrients are not present.

It would be wise to consult regularly with your local veterinarian for advice and maintenance of a pet reptile. It could be a good practice, if your giant green iguana could be taught to ride in you car for the regular doctor visits.

During the mating season, male iguanas tend to become grumpy and aggressive. It would be wise to find a partner for him to get a release of his aggressiveness. During this season on the other hand, female iguanas may lay unfertilized eggs. During this stage, female iguanas are more sensitive and delicate. Care must be given to ensure them of a peaceful and quiet laying of her eggs.

When acquiring giant green iguanas from pet shops because a child requested for it. Pet owners must know what are to be expected including its size, life span, behavior, feeding habits and its desired surroundings. Otherwise the pet may end up unhappy and may die prematurely. The new pet owners must be willing to adapt to its needs as it grows.

From its growing stage, care must be given to them in terms of temperature, environmental state, food intake and supplemental foods and regular visits to its veterinarian.

I am interested in purchasing a nutritional supplement at the best price. At the same time I want to know that what is being put into the body is safe. How can I find a reputable online source?

With melamine being found in pet food and baby formula I consider this a very relevant question.

I can totally relate. I use Andrew Lessman’s Vitamins. His vitamins are sold on HSN.com and on his website procapslabs.com. His Essential 1 Multivitamin is good. I also use additional supplements as well (Calcium, Omega 3, and Iron).

Hope this helps. Good luck!
