The Papillon continues to be among the less popular breeds in North America. Papillon production in the United States has increased in recent years. A Papillon, Ch. Loteki Supernatural Being, won Best in Show in 1999 at the Westminster Kennel Club show. He also won many hearts. Kirby, who won the most in breed history also won the World Dog Show in Helsinki Finland, and the Royal Invitational in Canada in 1998, which has also attracted many new admirers of the Papillon.

As for the Papillon’s ability as a service dog, yes most definitely, the Papillon dog can be well-suited for service work. The Papillon has been bred for centuries as a companion dog and possesses one of the most important assets of a good service dog. This asset is how the Papillon enjoys spending the majority of time with his human partner and creates the ultimate in human-animal bonding.

Although larger dogs are required for some tasks for the disabled such as providing brace and balance, pulling wheelchairs, opening heavy doors, the Papillons are able to perform the majority of required tasks for a variety of disabilities. These tasks may include but are not limited to:

• Picking up objects dropped on the floor like pens, hairbrushes, keys or coins;

• Papillons can learn to make beds, tug clothing from the dryer, put clothing in a basket and it from room to room;

• Papillons can learn to take clothing from their human’s body;

• The breed can learn to open and shut doors, drawers and cabinets inside the home, bring the telephone when it rings, shut off the alarm clock;

• From the lap, a Papillon can activate light switches, press handicap door openers, elevator buttons or hand change purse to a cashier.

The Papillon is naturally alert. This natural ability makes the Papillon an excellent choice as a hearing dog. He may also perform well as a seizure alert dog.

As a hearing ear or signal dog, the Papillon can be trained to alert their hearing impaired or deaf owners of environmental sounds, and to take their owner to the source of the sound. The Papillon may alert his hearing impaired owner to:

• A baby crying;
• Someone calling the owner’s name in the event of immediate danger;
• A siren going off;
• A smoke detector going off;
• The sound of the alarm clock, microwave ring of completion, washer or dryer ring of completion;
• And a telephone ringing.

As a seizure alert dog, the Papillon is one who alerts his owner to impending crises, and responds in a trained way. The Papillon’s owner who has Epilepsy or a brain disorder is then given a chance to move to a safe area before a dangerous episode occurs. They can also be trained to respond by seeking help in these situations, or by aspirating fluids from their owner’s mouth during convulsions.

The uneven distribution of Papillon breeders presents a major challenge for those who are seeking a Papillon just for a pet companion. Some resources for locating a Papillon with aptitude to become a service dog are:

• Breeder lists published by national or regional breed clubs;
• The Papillon Club of America.

These organizations should be able to guide you in the appropriate direction to acquire a Papillon with the aptitude of becoming a service dog or a Papillon already performing service work.

Cat litter mats are becoming as necessary as cat litter boxes, especially for homeowners who keep cats indoors at all times.

For people, mats are used as hygienic materials that wipe off unwanted dirt from the sole of their shoes or from their feet. Normally, in houses, you would find mats under doors, to help wipe off unwanted substances off the feet of people.

For cats, the litter mat also does the same. The feline creatures will need to have something where they can wipe off the unnecessary dirt under their paws. Remember, cats would be really uncomfortable if they find their paws dirty, and so they would always find a material or an object where they could wipe clean themselves.

Cat litter boxes have become necessities for households with pet cats. It is in this mini-furniture that cats eliminate their stool and urine. As animals, it is just natural that cats would urinate and excrete feces, and the problem would arise from their choice of where to do such activities.

If you are a cat owner and you have already invested in a litter box, you should make the investment do its function better by further investing in cat litter mats.

The litter mat should be placed under the litter box. The function is very logical. After the cat has gone out of the litter box, of course, the paws would be covered by dirt and several pieces of tiny litter.

Once the cat steps out of the box, it would be helpful if would immediately step into a litter mat. The mat would wipe clean the cat’s paws that should be covered with a little dirt and litter from inside the litter box.

Instinctively, the cat would wipe itself and would step out of the mat once it feels that its paws are already clean and litter-free. Without the litter mat, the cat would be forced to find some other material or household furniture that would serve the purpose.
//-->

Investing in cat litter mats would help you prevent the cat from wiping it paws clean in the floor carpet, at the top of your bed, or any other clothing material around.

Of course, with its soft material that is basically consisting of polyethylene, the cat litter mat could serve other purposes other than being a complementary material to the litter box.

You could also turn the litter mat as a place for feeding your beloved feline pet. Just put the mat out under the litter box, and place the feeding bowl on top of it.

Doing so would help prevent cat food and liquid from spilling onto the carpet or floor. The mat would functionally serve as a place mat, that would help the surrounding area of the food bowl mess-free.

Just like cleaning other mats, all you have to do is wipe clean the litter mat. Manufacturers also recommend a simple cleaning procedure—just shake out the litter and tiny dirt out of the mat. It is that simple.

You are not required to wash the litter mat as detergents may leave scents that could repel the cat’s olfactory senses. Remember, cats’ sense of smell is about 14 times sharper that humans’.

Cat litter mats are sold in the market at different sizes. Buy the size that fits your preference and that you think would be truly functional.

You can easily buy them at your nearest pet supply store, or in the house furniture retailers. Orders can also be placed online, for your utmost convenience.

Invest in cat litter mats, as well as you invest in other cat materials and food. Over the long term, you would surely find that the investment is well worth it. Your relationship with your feline pet would consequently be improved.

Does your budget never seem to balance the way it should? Are you constantly digging into the savings to make ends meet?

If you find that your budget isn’t doing the job, then it’s time to take a good look at essential components you might be missing or you have not allowed sufficiently for.

Some of the biggest budget blunders are:

1. Failure to plan for inevitable expenses

We all have irregular expenses that we naively refer to as “unexpected.” Come on, is that flat tire really unexpected? Don’t you secretly know that these things happen? Have you ever owned a car that did not need repairs or maintenance? If you have, you probably didn’t own it long enough. The solution; Start counting on the car breaking down instead of hoping it doesn’t!

The car isn’t the only area we slight in the budget. Do you find yourself hoping and praying that the hot water heater, washer, dryer, or some other major appliance doesn’t need to be repaired or, worse yet, replaced.

Home maintenance is always a factor in our finances. Even if you rent, you probably have some home related expenses waiting to creep up on you.

These are just a couple examples of variable expenses that we often overlook.

When you consider the following other categories that could be included in this list, you can see the serious consequences this oversight can have on your budget.

Property, Auto, Health and Life Insurance if not paid on a monthly schedule.

Even if you do pay monthly, you should try to save for a lump payment if at all possible. Most companies charge up to a $3 fee for monthly payment options. It doesn’t sound like a lot but, over a years time it’s $36 you won’t be investing in their cause. I say, it’s always best to invest in yourself. Don’t you agree? Put the $36 in your savings!

Taxes – Property, Federal, and State – If you know you will have to pay Uncle Sam, prepare for it. If you value your home or other property investment, prepare for the costs. Don’t scramble at the last minute to come up with enough to pay your obligations. It’s likely other areas of your budget will suffer greatly, since these expenses have a high priority.

Clothing – Now, I can wear a piece of clothing ’til you can see through the threads. I work at home, so I only have a few choice pieces for special occasions. I’m a no frills kind of gal. But, I have four kids. Do I expect them to stop growing or somehow not care how they look to their peers? Of course not! But, I’m working on it. Just kidding! I know that they will need more clothes, more shoes, more accessories….etc., etc., etc., etc…

I use every resource available to me to cut down the clothing budget, I know I must account for this expense. It will arise, whether I am prepared or not!

School Supplies – This is another one you just can’t omit if you have kids. You can, however, use some clever money saving techniques and multiple resources to keep this expense to a minimum.

Pet Care – If you have a pet, you most likely have expenses that come with this beloved family member. Vaccinations, flea control, veterinarian, and food are just a few that come to mind. Again, minimize the costs by using all your resources.

Tip: My local county animal shelter gives rabies vaccines for $5. Good for three years if regularly vaccinated. Does yours?

Gifts – If your friends, family, and kids don’t care if they don’t get gifts from you, if you’ve declared war on the holidays, or have a convenient hiding place when these occasions take place, then you can skip this one!

I’m guessing most of you are including this one. It’s inevitable. My best advice is to set strict limits and be a smart shopper. Seek out the bargains and buy when it’s a deal, even if it’s months ahead of time.

Medical – Unless you’re lucky enough, or not lucky (depending on how you look at it), to qualify for medical assistance, you undoubtedly have medical expenses over and above the cost of your health insurance; Co-pays for doctors and medicines, over-the-counter medications, dental and eye care expenses. Nope, can’t omit it, have to include it. Sorry, it’s a must have!

Vacation – If you have the income, include this one to make planning less stressful. Get inventive if you don’t have enough income. You can still have a vacation with limited, or no, travel expenses.

2. No Emergency Fund…

. . .or misconceptions about what warrants an emergency. An emergency is this case should be limited to an unexpected occurrence. No, if you’ve been listening, having to replace the water pump on your car is not an emergency. A real emergency might include; loss of income, severe illness, or death in the family.

Although we all hope such occurrences never happen to us, sometimes we aren’t lucky enough to escape these unfortunate events in life.

You should try to set aside a specific amount, no matter how little, each month in an emergency fund to eventually equal at least three to six months of your current income.

3. Living Above Your Means.

This is simply spending more than you earn. Unfortunately, this is a direct consequence of budget blunders #1 and #2. When funds are not set aside for variable expenses and emergencies, you will inevitably turn to plastic money (credit cards) to bail out. Spending more than you earn is a sure sign that you’re headed for trouble. When you spend future earnings it’s like “counting your chickens before the eggs hatch.” The long term consequences are usually devastating. It’s likely you’ll end up in deep debt and eventually have no where to turn except counseling or bankruptcy. Don’t let it get that far. Take control of your money. Now!

If you’ve been making these budget blunders, you’re probably exhausted just considering all the work you have to do on your budget. I’m exhausted just writing about it. The sooner you get started, the sooner you’ll be on the path to a really successful budget.

Add up all your variable expenses and divide by twelve to come up with a monthly amount that you should be setting aside for this expense. Keep these funds separate from your monthly bill fund to avoid dipping into it accidentally.

Start with 5-10% of your income to start a savings, or apply to an existing savings, each month for your emergency fund.

Make sure your expenses are within your income. If not, start reviewing, eliminating, and reducing those expenses to fit into your income limits.

A good budget is like a good friend. It helps keep you strong and steady.

For people that love dogs, yet have allergic reactions to them, there is a simple alternative. If you cannot do without a four legged friend, choosing a hypoallergenic dog is without doubt the best alternative. For those who are scratching their heads wondering what one of those is, a hypoallergenic dog is not a special breed of dog. They are dogs that generate less (hypo) allergens (allergenic) in the air, which has a lot to do with both the physical size and the length of fur of the dog.

For allergy sufferers, finding an allergy-friendly dog is probably the most sensible approach or choice. This does not mean that the dog will be completely allergy proof, but it does mean that this type of dog tends to generate less amounts of allergy causing elements. The reality is that it is impossible to find a dog that causes no degree of allergens.

Allergy reactions from dogs can consist of skin rashes, watery and itchy eyes, sneezing and a stuffy nose. More serious reactions are wheezing, asthma attacks and not being able to breathe deeply. Obviously these can be frightening reactions and choosing not to have a pet, for these reasons, clearly can outweigh the benefits of having one.

For dog lovers, who suffer with allergies that can be a very hard fact to accept. The reason some people suffer as a result of simple pet hair is because of their immune system. They are hypersensitive to the components found on the dog hair.

Many people think it is the animal hair that causes the problem, but in reality it is what attaches itself to the pet hair. The hair picks up pollen and dust attaching itself to the hair follicle. With normal movements of your dog, the elements are distracted on whatever it comes across. Hence, larger and longer haired dogs have a tendency to generate more allergens than smaller and shorter haired dogs. Therefore, the bigger the dog, the more allergy components it will distract.

If choosing a dog from a breeder, try spending at least 30 minutes playing with the dog and being in the area around the dog to see how you react to it. If you have a severe reaction in that short amount of time, then you can be pretty confident that having it as a live-in would not be a good idea.

If you are choosing a breeder who lives a substantial distance away, then one thing to consider is sending a clothing item to the breeder and asking them to place it near the dog for a day. Then get them to send it back to you in a plastic bag. Wear the clothing item or breathe in the smell and see how you react. If there is no reaction, you might want to consider visiting the breeder in person. If you do get a negative reaction, then it is best not to waste your time visiting in person. The allergic reaction would probably be worse if you were around the real thing.

Another thing you might want to consider when choosing a dog is the temperament. You want to choose a dog that will meet your needs, and be confident that you in turn, can meet their needs as well. Not only do you want to choose an allergy-friendly dog, but if you have a family, you want one that is family-friendly as well.

There are a few breeds you might want to consider: Bichon Frise, Irish Terrier and Poodles. These dogs enjoy being in family surroundings, they are considered to be excellent with children and they also make great watch dogs. Critically they also have low shedding levels. If you are a single adult, you might want to consider a dog that is happy with minimal people in their surroundings. In that situation a couple of good choices might be Chihuahua or a Portuguese Water Dog. These dogs tend to bond with one person rather than several.

There are a few dogs that you really want to stay away from because of their high shedding ability. These are Cocker Spaniels, Irish Setters, Dachshunds, Basset hounds, German Shepherds and Afghan Hounds.

If you choose an indoor dog, it is best to choose one that can be groomed regularly or that you can bath easily. It is best to bath them at least one or two times per week. This will reduce the amount of pet dander. Taking care of their hair is an important part of reducing the components that cause allergies. You can even choose a hairless dog such as the Chinese Crested, American Hairless Terrier or the Mexican Hairless.

Some people claim that certain breeds bring out the worst in their allergies than others. In choosing a breed, be open to finding the best one that suits you and also fits in with your lifestyle.

Lost Dog: 11 Ways You Can Prepare In Case Your Dog Gets Lost

The unfortunate risk we have when raising a lovably dog is the fact that sometimes they do run away and get lost. It’s not a scenario we want to think about, but it is always wiser to be prepared for such an incident.

First of all, before you begin combing the neighborhood looking for your dog, make sure he is not trapped or hiding somewhere in your home. A small dog may be napping somewhere sight unseen. Bring along a smelly treat or favorite noise-making toy to get a hiding dog’s attention. Once you have determined that your dog is missing, follow these steps to find him.

1. Make copies of your dog’s photo with his name and your phone number.

2. Talk to neighbors and leave a copy of the mini poster with them.

3. To entice your dog to come home, place articles of clothing with your scent on them outside your house. Place some of your dog’s bedding and some special foods with the clothing.

4. Call local veterinarians and emergency clinics in case your dog was injured and taken for treatment.

5. Shelters are often required by law to hold dogs for a certain number of days for owners to claim them. Contact shelters in your area in case someone found your dog and turned him over to a shelter. Make daily shelter visits to view the animals yourself; occasionally, shelter staff will not be aware of new animals that have arrived.

6. Post fliers of your dog in businesses and shops within a one-mile radius of your home or where he was lost.

7. Place an ad in your local newspaper and check the pet lost and found sections daily.

8. Call the Notional Lost Pet Hotline or the National Found Pet Hotline

9. Contact the on-line Missing Pets Network, a virtual linking of web sites provided by the U.S.

Department of Agriculture, where you can post a notice of a lost pet. In most cases your post will appear on the web site within 24 hours.

For people that love dogs, yet have allergic reactions to them, there is a simple alternative. If you can’t do without a four legged “friend,” choosing a hypoallergenic dog is the best alternative. For those who are scratching their heads, a hypoallergenic dog is not a special breed of dogs. They are dogs that generate less (hypo) allergens (allergenic) in the air, which has a lot to do with the dog’s physical size and length of its fur.

For allergy sufferers, finding an allergy-friendly dog is the most reasonable choice. This doesn’t mean that the dog will be completely allergy proof, but it does mean that this type of dog tends to generate less amounts of allergy causing elements.

It is impossible to find a dog that causes no degree of allergens.

Allergy reactions from dogs can consist of skin rashes, watery and itchy eyes, sneezing and a stuffy nose. More serious reactions are wheezing, asthma attacks and not being able to breathe deeply.

These can be frightening reactions and choosing not to have a pet, for these reasons, out ways the benefits of having one. For dog lovers, who suffer with allergies, this is a hard fact to accept.

The reason some people suffer from simple pet hair is because of their immune system. They are hypersensitive to the components found on the dog hair. Many people think it is the animal hair that causes the problem, but in reality it is what attaches itself to the pet hair.

The dog’s hair picks up pollen and dust attaching itself to the hair follicle. With normal movements, the elements are distracted on whatever it comes across.

Hence, larger and longer haired dogs have a tendency to generate more allergens than smaller and shorter haired dogs Therefore, the bigger the dog, the more allergy components it will distract.

If choosing a dog from a breeder, try spending at least 30 minutes playing with the dog and being in the dog’s area to see how you react to it.

If you have a severe reaction in that amount of time, then you can be assured that having it as a live-in would not be a good idea.

If you’re choosing a breeder who lives a substantial distance away, send a clothing item to the breeder and ask them to place it near the dog for a day and send it back to you in a plastic bag. Wear the clothing item or breathe in the smell and see how you react.

If no reaction, you might want to consider visiting the breeder in person. If you do get a negative reaction, it’s best not to waste your time visiting in person. The allergic reaction would probably be worse if you were around the real thing.

Another thing you might want to consider when choosing a dog is the temperament.

You want to choose a dog that will meet your needs, and you in turn, can meet its needs as well. Not only do you want to choose an allergy-friendly dog, but if you have a family, you want one that is family-friendly as well.

Here are a few breeds to consider: Bichon Frise, Irish Terrier, Poodles.

These dogs enjoy family surroundings, they’re excellent with children and they make great watch dogs. They also have low shedding levels.

If you are a single adult, you might want to consider a dog that is happy with minimal people surroundings. A couple of good choices would be Chihuahua or a Portuguese Water Dog. These dogs tend to bond with one person rather than several.

Here are a few dogs to stay away from due to their high shedding ability. They are: Cocker Spaniels, Irish Setters, Dachshunds, Basset hounds, German Shepherds and Afghan Hounds.

If you choose an indoor dog, it’s best to choose one that can be groomed regularly or that you can bath easily. It’s best to bath them at least 1-2 times per week.

This will reduce the amount of pet dander. Taking care of your dog’s hair is an important part of reducing the components that cause allergies.

You can even choose a hairless dog such as the Chinese Crested, American Hairless Terrier or the Mexican Hairless.

Some people claim that certain breeds bring out the worst in their allergies than others. In choosing a breed, be open to find the best one that fits your lifestyle.

Facts about pets

Australian families who share their homes with pets number among the highest in the world, with 64% of households including pets. In those 7.5 million households, fish top the pet population at over 12 million, followed by birds, at 9 million. At almost 4 million, there are more dogs than either boys or girls under the age of 14 years, and our domestic cat population is approximately two and a half million. If we group horse for pleasure riding, rodents, rabbits, snakes, lizards and others together, we can add another 2 million pets.

Pet Supplies Pet association has been shown to have enormous positive benefits on health and wellbeing of Australians. When you have a pet as a member of your family, you will visit the doctor less frequently and use less medication, have lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure, recover from illness and surgery more rapidly, deal with stress better and be less likely to feel lonely. All in all, it is estimated that pet association saves the Australian health budget almost S4 billion annually.

Around 90% of Australian familles with pets, consider those pets as fully integrated family members and the primary caregiver who assumes responsibility for the pet in the majority of situations is female. Not surprisingly, expenditure on pets, pet care and pet products in Australia is placed at more than $4 billion annually and provides employment for more than 40,000 people. Of this expenditure, two thirds (66%) is spent on dogs and one quarter (25%) is spent on cats. Dogs therefore get the greater amount of attention in pet world.

Care and grooming products

Caring for pets requires time and energy on the part of the caregiver. In today’s busy world, time is a commodity in shorter supply than perhaps it once was. There are a lot of products available to help reduce the amount of time needed for pet care. Search Myshopping.com.au for pet care products for your particular animal.

There are automatic feeding and watering products that mean your animal can access food and water when they need it and don’t have to depend on you being there to attend to it. Having water readily available for dogs and cats is important because they dehydrate more quickly than humans. Automated pet feeders not only reduce the chore of being there to provide meals for your pets, but add the convenience of timing food releases for animals that may be subject to particular dietary needs. Using an elevated pet feeder can aid your pet’s digestion because the pet doesn’t have to strain and bend over to access the food. Portable watering and feeding products are useful for those who take their pets with them at work or on the move, and include drinking pouches and feedbags for dogs and cats.

The need to groom your pet depends a lot on your living environment, and whether (or how much) your pet is an indoor or outdoor pet. Grooming could be a daily, weekly or occasionally scheduled activity, and is necessary to keep the animal’s coat healthy and to eradicate fleas and other parasites. It is also important to keep dander in check. Grooming products for pets include products for coat maintenance, nail clipping, dental care, bathing and beauty. There is a huge range of shampoos, face washes, and deodorisers and skin care products as well as styling tools and bows and ribbons for beautification. Grooming tools you may require could include a grooming table, heated blower-dryer, combs, rakes and brushes. As well as nail files and clippers.

Accommodation and transport products

As we cram ourselves into smaller and smaller living spaces, we have a need to accommodate our pets in the most comfortable manner. There is a huge range of bedding, mat and cushion products for dogs and cats, as well as cages and aquariums for birds and fish. (Aquariums are also available for hermit crabs and snails). Small ‘housing’ products such as indoor and outdoor kennels and sleeping tents and bags come in a variety of sizes and styles to suit all kinds of living environments. Rugs and shelters are also important for keeping your pets warm during cold weather, and insulated or shaded shelters are important during warmer weather. Pet that suffer from arthritis can benefit from pet warming pads, while animals that have motor disabilities can benefit from special ramps and steps that aid them in their mobility.

As a large proportion of pet owners like to travel with their pets in cars or on bicycles, there are a large number of travelling options, including specially designed car seats, harness and soft cages. Some car seats double as a travel suitcase to carry your pet’s travel needs or as a bed for a comfortable night’s sleep. For the cyclist, there is a range of pet bicycle baskets available with different safety and security features.

One of the reasons that pets help foster better health is due to the time we spend walking, running or playing with them. Searching Myshopping.com.au for leads and collars will yield a tremendous variety of products. Leads that you can belt around your waist give you ‘hands-free’ control of your dog while you walk or jog freely. Collars not only provide a way to carry your animal’s registration tags, but also provide a unique identity for your pet. If your pet is small or has a disability, you can get a pet stroller or a pocket pouch to walk or carry your pet.

Safe and secure enclosures can keep pets from wandering off, while giving them an outdoor experience. Safety pet fences or cat fences are wire mesh enclosures that can be used in backyards or on balconies to keep you pet safe while giving tem the ability to stretch in the fresh air. Portable soft pens, many of which can be coupled together to enclose a larger area, are ideal for containing a pet indoors or blocking off an entrance.

Safety products and toys

There are occasions when both pets and humans need to be kept safe from each other and from other dangers in the home and neighbourhood. These can include muzzles and safety restraints, as well as steps and life preservers to use in shimming pools and at beaches. The elderly pet may need special pet stairs or slings to help with mobility, or a brace that acts as a support crutch.

There is no shortage of toys for your pet available through Myshopping.com.au and may include scratching posts and tunnels for your cat; Frisbees, balls and bones for your dog, mirrors and balls for your birds, racing tracks for rodents. You can even find the more unusual toys along with training devices; clothing articles and pampering products here on Myshopping.com.au just click and search.
