Are there any super supplements for birds like parakeets?

Friday Apr 30, 2010

Hi , does anyone know if there are any food supplements for birds like parakeets? Maybe something like hormones or steroids? I am asking because I was at the pet store and their parakeets are all fat and big. I asked the employee how come the parakeets are so large, he said its due to high fat diet. But I think, is it possible they also give them some kind of hormones/steroids or some super vitamins?

Anyone know anything like that?

Parakeets shouldn’t be getting any type of hormones or steroids. They are too dangerous for them and cause much damage to their bodies. If the parakeets are all fat, it could be due to a high-fat, seed only type of diet. A fat parakeet isn’t a healthy parakeet. Many of these parakeets end up gettting fatty liver disease, which can be fatal. Parakeets need to be fed a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and calcium in the form of a cuttlebone or mineral block.

I found a Pet Vitamin supplement that looks great but I want to know if anyone uses it.?

Friday Apr 30, 2010

Its a newer company based out of California called Vetraceuticals, it is affordable and is very healthy for cats and dogs has anyone used them or thought of using them or even heard anything on the company or product? the link I have is www.vetrabiz.com/lucas if you want to check it out for yourself I am thinking of getting it for my baby husky
If you notice tho, most pet food is canned and stored killing most of the nutrients, I take vitamins my self so I know how helpful they are and for these prices no one can be getting ripped off

I hate it when people answer like the guy above. It is great to help your animals out. i know nothing of this one in paricular but I use supplements to and they were even suggested by vets who specialized in my animals types.

Good Luck!!!

is there any specific bengal cat health problems dealing with bowel dysfunction?

Friday Apr 30, 2010

I have a bengal cat who does not seem to be able to have a bowel movement. The vets cannot find any physical reason for this and if nothing can be discovered soon there is not much hope for the poor guy. Any enlightenment on this would be great. He is on stool softeners which are working and is eating and drinking well and has no blockages and does not have megacolon.

Seek if you have not already a specialist like a small animal internists-or get a second opinion-there is nothing breed specific that comes to mind-have you tried a high fiber diet and obviously lactose(stool softener) and even giving canned pumpkin twice daily. I am shocked that it is not Mega colon because this is very common complaint in cats.Let me know. The only other thing that comes to mind is something neurologically not working right-possibly tumor /brain lesions?Hope not but once again seek a second opinion.

Is Our Pet Stuff Really Necessary?

Saturday Apr 24, 2010

There have always been some animal owners that go over the top with pampering their pet poodle or fluffy feline, although most of us would stretch to no more to a colorful collar and a squeaky toy. But things have changed and more pets than ever before are getting 5 star treatments as the shops stock up on all the latest pet stuff to hit the modern market.

If you are an animal lover, and you probably are if you’re reading here, then you will probably relate to this. There are so many cool gimmicky, practical and ridiculous pet playthings around today, that we as a nation are spending more on pet stuff than ever before.

Have you seen the dog toothbrushes, or ribbons for cats? What about those little shoes and socks to keep the paws warm on those cold winter walkies, not to mention the tartan coats, and little caps? Honestly, it’s as if Sherlock Holmes has been turned into a canine by the local witch. But when is too much of this pet stuff just a little too much for the pets?

I understand that these owners are genuinely loving and caring towards their animals, but I wonder what the pets would say about it all if only they could speak? Would Pita the poodle really be jumping for joy at the front door if he knew he was going to Suzie’s Salon for a cut and blow dry? And what about that pink tint? Hmm!

Back in the 1960’s we had a lovely mongrel bitch called Babble. She was allowed to run amuck in the local park and get all mudded as she enjoyed a right good ole game of fetch the stick. No colors, no coats or fancy foot wear, and no avoiding puddles or dirty fields. Just a boy, his dog, and small tree branch! We had no pricy pet stuff in those days. Babble’s treat was a simple tuppenny ha’penny chewable thingamajig that lasted her for months before she was able to gnaw it to bits.

Our beautiful Babble went on to live for 16 long years before she eventually passed away. She was a happy dog and we were happy to have had her. So what’s with all these natural and premium pet foods that are being promoted as the in-thing for your dog’s health? Then there are vitamins for all kinds of animals plus various grooming supplies. Now we’re seeing flashing collars, dog shock collars (now that’s a different article), lavish leashes, travel accessories, bedding (including four posters for rodents!) and aquariums with underwater fairgrounds!

Don’t get me wrong here, there’s a lot of great pet stuff out there among the stupid items, but I think the best present any animal could get from its owner, it a bit of customary fuss, regular meals, and plenty of opportunity for exercise, whether that’s a walk for the hounds, a fly pass for the birds, and wheels, swings and climbing things for the rodents.

Enough said!

Special Pet Care Needs For Older Dogs

Saturday Apr 24, 2010

The average lifespan for most dogs is between eight and sixteen years. Some breeds age expectancy is less while other breeds normally have a longer lifespan. Once your dog becomes older it is time to take some preventative steps in order for them remain healthy, happy and active. Have your vet examine your pet annually or more often, if necessary. Veterinarians understand the different breed types and are familiar with problems you may encounter with your pet. They watch for this and make you aware of what to look for, if your dog is acting a little different.

As in humans, keep your dogs weight within the proper or optimum range. An overweight dog has far more health problems such as joint problems, arthritis, diabetes and liver or kidney malfunctions. If your dog is too heavy, buy dog treats low in sugar and salt or purchase dog cookies especially made for overweight dogs, which are low in calories. Also, cut down on the amount of treats given to your pet. It is hard to resist their soulful eyes but always remember that it is for their own good. You do not want to kill your pet by thinking you are being kind to them. Feed your pet once a day or smaller amounts twice a day but remove the food if there is any left. If you have children, explain to them why they should not sneak food to the family pet.

Pre-soak or add water to the dog’s dry food if they have lost some teeth or have dental problems. Daily brushing helps prevent problems but always use toothpaste made specifically for pets, not humans. Start brushing your pet’s teeth when they are young, so they are used to the routine. Have their teeth examined annually by the vet, as they may need to have some pulled or professionally cleaned.

As with dogs of any age, make sure there is always fresh, cool water available. Some older dogs have problems getting to the water bowl so either take the water to them or place bowls of water in several different places so they do not have to go far for a drink.

If possible take your dog for a short walk daily. This helps the dog’s blood circulation and provides some new sights and smells to stimulate them and it gives you quality time to spend with your pet.

Unfortunately, dogs suffer from arthritis just like humans. Keep your dogs weight down and feed him food especially formulated for older dogs, as this does help. Talk to your vet because there is medication available that often makes your pet more comfortable and move easier. Supplements are available, but always check with your veterinarian before giving these to your dog.

Many great orthopedic dog beds are available. Some are made of memory foam and there are heated beds available. An older dog needs good support and warmth for their aging body. Dog beds are easies for your pet to get into than a sofa or your bed.

Looking after your senior pet and taking him to the vet regularly helps keep your Dog Healthy and happy longer.

Webkinz Phenomenon – Educational Benefits!

Saturday Apr 24, 2010

The Webkinz phenomenon is producing positive feedback from children and parents alike! These plush toy pets are affordable, offer a variety of associated online activities at no additional cost and have educational benefits to boot!

Webkinz, produced by the Ganz gift company, are marketed similarly to Beanie Babies. And speaking of the Beanie Babies this is an equal if not greater craze never seen before or since until Webkinz! However, Webkinz targeted age group is 6 – 13 years of age in contrast to the Beanie Babies that appealed to more of an adult market.

The marketing strategy is modern and smart. The purchase of one toy earns you a one year membership to the Webkinz World website. Nevertheless, a majority of sales are repeat customers. Children are collecting numerous webkinz.

Your experience begins with the purchase of a webkinz stuffed animal of choice for approximately $11.99 through $15.99. Each pet has a unique identity in it’s name given by the owner. When you register your pet on the site it receives an online room, food, starter furniture, and starter cash. You can earn cash by playing online games and then purchase clothing for your pet and items to decorate its house. You can also send gifts to other Webkinz World members.

The genius in this strategy is that it gives younger children access to the internet on a safe fun site. This toy peaks the interest of children and parents alike being that we are living in an internet culture. It provides a gateway to the internet for a child which is a hugely significant part of the adult culture.

There are various educational benefits to taking care of your virtual pet online. The concept of care taking maintenance is exercised in that the child feeds, bathes and plays with their pet in order to increase it’s happiness. The child also must learn to prioritize “spending” and earn the “cash” needed to purchase items for their pet. Socially, the child can interact with their friends using Clubhouse Chat where they can instant message other webkinz members using a highly restrictive content instant messaging.

Finally, the games are educationally geared appealing to logic and problem solving skills. A feature game titled Quizzie’s Question Corner allows a child to pick from standard school subjects and answer trivia questions in order to earn Kinz cash!

Webkinz Pets are a smart, fun and apparently highly appealing! They take traditional play into the computer age in an affordable package. The associated website is rich with educational activities for children and the traditional stuffed animal is huggable and portable!

Pet Health Insurance – Is Health Insurance Necessary For Your Dog?

Saturday Apr 24, 2010

We all take out insurance to cover those bad days, or just to take precautions against illness, or to gain tax breaks. By far the most important ones are the car insurance and the medical insurance.

Medical insurance is necessary because medical care is expensive, God forbid, if someone were to fall sick, and require even a day or two’s hospitalisation. The bills are heavy, and it drains your pocket.

That’s precisely why Governments all over the world encourage you to take insurance against every possible eventuality, but most put down their foot on compulsory medical insurance. And they provide you a nice tax break.

But for your pet? Yes, you bet it is important. Your pet is also a member of your family. That also requires medical attention. It is not as if nature has made your pet, or for that matter, any living thing, immune to any disease. Your pet is no exception.

You took out medical insurance for your kids, your wife, your parents? Why, they are family. You pet? He’s your best friend, who is always there when you are angry, sorrow, resigned, companion on your walks, and often times, protects you from danger, so why won’t you look after his health.

Just as docs, hospitals and medicines for humans are expensive, so too for the pets. Mind you they too don’t come cheap. It would cost say how much more? 10 dollars to take out one? It’s worth it.

Just one visit to the vet would set you back by more than that. Of course you have to check out with your insurer what costs would be covered such as consultation with the vet, a minor correctional surgery, medicines, etc. Essentially, the same questions that you would ask for human medical insurance.

Insurance is all about”What if”. If that what if happens to your pet, where would you go to get that 100 dollars for treatment, or would you leave him the Pound. You bet you won’t be able to sleep. Even if you steeled yourself, you would feel as if you had lost part of your family. Further the pound is not keeping your pet free. You pay.

We bet that you will be back in the middle ofthe night and take him back home! We have been through it. So just forget, and take out that insurance, and get yourself some peace of mind.

You don’t just walk away on your best friend for a few dollars more !

Shop around. Try your Kennel Club.

You know something. They would have struck a deal with an insurer for a comprehensive policy on which each contributes an amount. That may be cheaper for you as well, and give you better coverage. That’s known as Group Insurance Policy; just the same as you have in your office. The higher the number of insureds, lower the premium. So join, and take the benefit.

So what’s the big deal and what stops you from looking for it ? Check them all out. And do it.

It’s for your best friend, and remember, you are HIS best friend. A friend in need is a friend in deed, Sir!
